FORTNITE
Development Coordinator
My main responsibilities as a dev coordinator with Epic Games were working with the quest design and production teams on Fortnite Battle Royale. I was also able to work with the writing team on both Fortnite Battle Royale and LEGO® Fortnite scripts and quest text.
PRODUCTION
Working with the quest design and production team on such a large, live service project was such an incredible experience that required frequent meetings and communication both within the quest team and across multiple other teams such as gameplay, art, audio, level design, marketing, release, and so many more. Going from my experiences with small independent and student teams to working on one of the biggest video games in the world was equally exciting and daunting.
My personal responsibilities ranged, but were encompassed in traditional production assistant tasks, such as:
-
Scheduling and conducting meetings to review and playtest upcoming quest content
-
Coordinate needs across teams to ensure better communication and practices
-
Task out and assist with bug fixes and changes from a production standpoint
-
Run quest designs and text through both internal and external approval processes
-
Work with release team to quickly hotfix any unforeseen quest issues that went live
-
Maintain tracking and production documentation
WRITING
During my contract, I also was able to work closely with the writing team at Epic, and eventually started contributing to both Fortnite Battle Royale and LEGO® Fortnite with NPC scripts (both written and voiced), item naming, and quest text.
Writing for Fortnite presents some unique challenges with how many external Intellectual Properties Epic works with. I got to experience not only writing for Fortnite's internal IP, but also for partner IPs like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Avatar the Last Airbender, Metal Gear Solid, and more. Working with IP producers was something that fell into my role as a Development Coordinator, so I was able to own that writing all up, from creation to revision to approval.
While I have experience with narrative implementation in several game engines including Unreal Engine, it's important to note that I never touched the engine during my time on Fortnite. Any writing I did was implemented by game designers, and as a development coordinator there was no need to me to be in the engine.
